Attractions
Banana Shire Regional Art Gallery
The Banana Shire Regional Gallery (BSRAG) is an initiative operated by the Banana Shire Council and sits alongside the Banana Shire Council Chambers in Biloela. The gallery is free to the public and displays local, Central Queensland artists, and works from beyond through touring exhibitions. The gallery has two exhibition spaces where displays are changed around every 6-8 weeks, and workshop facilities.
The gallery also houses the Banana Shire Art Collection which is displayed amongst the exhibition schedule.
The Silo
Biloela has a prominent tourist feature, the "Silo", an exhibit recycled from the 1988 Brisbane Expo, forming part of the Primary Industries Museum on the Dawson Highway.
Mount Scoria
Mount Scoria rises up from the surrounding plain, a single and spectacular highlight against an otherwise flat landscape. Across its peak, multi-sided rocks are regimented into large vertical and semi-vertical pillars or columns, blunt at the top as if they’d been cropped. Not only odd in shape, the columns are also unique for the sound they make when struck.
Still standing tall after 25 million years, Scoria’s exceptional staying power is due to the hard volcanic rock that lay at the core, exposed only after the softer surface had weathered away.
The work of a small volcano, the mountain is actually a basalt plug and the dramatic, angular-shaped rocks the result of the cooling process. The six-sided columns cooled slowly and evenly, while the five, seven, or eight-sided columns cooled much faster and erratically.
Thangool Racecourse
There is nothing quite like a day of country racing, even if you are not a horse racing enthusiast you will be sure to have a great day out at Thangool Races held at 'Forde Park' located on the western outskirts of Thangool and 12 kilometres south of Biloela. Racing facilities at Forde Park comprise a grass track, betting and TAB facilities, SKY Channel, bookmakers, canteen, public bar set on an elevated mound overlooking the home straight and table and marque areas among the green lawns. Thangool Race Club hosts seven racedays each year including the Thangool Cup in September.
Callide Dam
Callide Dam is located 12 kilometres from Biloela via sealed road and approximately 90 kilometres south-west of Gladstone via the Dawson Highway.
While compact, the lake provides visitors with rewarding fishing - especially for golden perch (yellowbelly) and barramundi. Red-claw is abundant and it's well worth placing (tagged) traps for a catch of the tasty crayfish. A variety of other freshwater species are available to you and anglers report good success from bank fishing though the boat ramps make this an ideal spot for to launch a boat and follow the fish with a sounder.
Recent works has seen the upgrade of picnic shelters and a new amenities block for visitors. New barbecues and a corporate shelter have also been included as part of the upgrades to the picnic and recreation area.
Queensland Heritage Park
Queensland Heritage Park is situated in Biloela, Central Queensland and houses a large array of heritage displays which celebrate the our nation's glorious past, our rich heritage and the pioneering spirit of Australia.
These displays are also complimented by a number of interpretative and interactive displays focussing on the many diverse primary and secondary industries within the Central Queensland Region, and by a collection of photographs and family histories that provide an amazing insight into the cultural and social heritage of Biloela and the Banana Shire.
The Queensland Heritage Park Complex is open daily between the hours of 9.00am and 4.00pm and boasts an array of facilities including the Post & Rail Cafe and the Rural Hinterland Visitor Information Centre.
Kroombit Tops National Park
Take a bushwalk and explore forests on four-wheel-drive roads. Open forests dominated by Sydney blue gum, pink bloodwood and rough-barked apple trees flourish on the park’s eastern slopes. In the wetter south-eastern sandstone country, blackbutt forests dominate, and subtropical rainforests grow around some of the creeks. Many birds and animals in Kroombit Tops National Park are at the northern or southern limit of their distribution and it is the only known home to the endangered Kroombit tinkerfrog.
See the remains of a WWII Liberator bomber that crashed at Kroombit Tops in 1945 and remained hidden in the forest until it was discovered nearly 50 years later.
